Welcome to the homepage of Aliaksandr Birukou
Hello! I work as an Editorial Director at Springer, where I am running the conference proceedings program (~850 volumes/year, including the famous LNCS series) and leading a team in Computer Science Editorial in Heidelberg. Next to it, I am managing a team running the portfolio of 216 journals in different disciplines, translated from Russian. Apart from editorial work I represent CS in many internal and external R&D projects dealing with optimization or innovation of scientific publishing.
Most recent projects include: persistent IDentifiers for conferences (I also chair the Crossref/DataCite group; intelligent dashboards for editorial (automated assessment of conferences); OCS (conference submission management system). Previously I founded LOD Conference Portal, which later became a part of SciGraph.
I am also co-founder of ConfRef, which got the Digital Science Catalyst Grant and has the ambition of becoming Google for scientific conferences.
I also enjoy teaching courses about publishing and publishing innovation in the University of Trento, Italy, and People's Friendship University, Moscow, Russia.
This webpage summarizes my academic activities. You can see my academic record here.
I have a PhD in Information and Communication Technologies from the University of Trento, Italy (2009) and an MS degree with distinction in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from the Belarusian State University, Minsk, Belarus (2002). My research interests include science 2.0 (improving the way science works), Linked Open Data (LOD), machine learning, semantic web, patterns. I have previously worked on culture- and community-aware recommendation systems, data mining, multi-agent systems, artificial intelligence, compliance management, service-oriented computing, queuing systems.
I was a PC member and the Focus Group chair for EuroPLoP 2011, PC member for EuroPLoP 2012, served as a PC member for several international workshops, and reviewed papers for several journals (Scientometrics, IEEE Software, Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience, JAAMAS, IEEE TKDE, DKE, IJAOSE, IP&M, New Generation Computing) and a number of conferences (including AAMAS, CAISE, ICCBR, ICSOC).
See my Publon record.
I also have professional experience in managing research/industrial projects, software development and banking. Before starting my PhD, for almost four years I have been working in industry and my projects were successfully deployed in several Belarusian banks. Since then, I have always been involved in IT project management/consultancy at various levels.
